Kansas / ordinary passenger renewal
Kansas registration fee calculator
For 2026 Kansas prices the passenger license by propulsion: an all-electric car owes $165 a year, a plug-in hybrid $100 and a hybrid that cannot be plugged in $70. Each amount takes the place of the gas-car base fee, so the two are never stacked.
Primary agency schedules and enacted rules checked October 1, 2026.
Itemize the supported renewal components
One license fee per car
For a gas or diesel passenger car, K.S.A. 8-143(a)(4) uses two weight bands: $30 at 4,500 pounds or less and $40 above 4,500 pounds. Select the registered weight category, rather than assuming that every sedan or SUV falls in the lighter band.
The same subsection provides separate amounts for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. Once a fuel-specific category applies, the tool uses that amount instead of adding it to $30 or $40. A plug-in hybrid therefore has a $100 license component, not $130 or $140.
Old summaries showing $50 for a hybrid or $100 for an electric vehicle do not describe the current 2026 rates. The calculator limits the year selection to the researched schedule so an older notice cannot silently produce a current-year result.
What the subtotal covers
K.S.A. 8-145d provides a $5 county treasurer service fee. Adding that component gives known subtotals of $35 or $45 for ordinary gas/diesel weight bands, $75 for a hybrid, $105 for a plug-in hybrid and $170 for an electric car.
Those figures are not complete tag quotes. Vehicle property tax, other state charges, optional county facility fees and any mailing or electronic payment service can still be due. The county fee statute permits additional facility charges under specified conditions, so the mandatory $5 should not be treated as every county’s complete service amount.
Use the county renewal notice to reconcile each line. A receipt or tax amount from another county may not fit your registration. Trucks, antique registrations and partial terms have separate rules; they are not ordinary passenger renewals even when the vehicle is used personally.
