California Registration Fee Calculator
A California renewal is several fees, not one flat rate. Separate the registration and CHP charges from value-based VLF, the TIF band and any applicable electric-vehicle fee.
DMV schedules and VLF rounding law checked October 2, 2026. Independent estimate, not an official bill.

What the known subtotal includes
Registration + CHP
The published registration charge is $76, including the $3 alternative-fuel/technology component. Standard CHP is $34. Do not add that $3 again.
Vehicle license fee
0.65% of the DMV-determined VLF market value, rounded to a whole dollar. Under Revenue and Taxation Code §10759, fractions below 50 cents round down and 50 cents or more round up, with a $1 minimum for this ordinary nonexempt fee. For example, a confirmed $25,000 VLF market value produces $162.50 before rounding and a $163 VLF.
DMV uses a VLF classification and registration-year schedule. Enter the market value after those adjustments; this tool does not derive it from purchase price, model year or an online resale estimate. Use the DMV VLF manual and rate tables or your actual agency record to confirm the value and fee. Exempt vehicles require separate review.
Transportation improvement fee
A stepped charge based on vehicle value, not another percentage. It applies to original registrations, transfers and renewals. The five current bands appear below.
ZEV road improvement fee
The published RIF is $121 for model-year 2020 and later zero-emission vehicles unless exempt. Here it is added only for qualifying renewals. DMV excludes initial registration of a new ZEV purchased from a licensed dealer.

Worked renewal example: $30,000 assessed values
For a non-ZEV, $76 registration + $34 CHP + $195 VLF + $132 TIF gives a $437.00 known subtotal. A qualifying 2020-or-newer ZEV renewal adds $121, bringing these components to $558.00.
Neither number is a statewide all-in price. County fees, smog-related charges, penalties, exemptions and other conditions can change the bill.
Value bands
Transportation improvement fee
A vehicle at $24,999 falls in the $66 band; at $25,000 it enters the $132 band. Use the assessed value applicable to your DMV transaction.
TIF and VLF inputs are separate because this calculator does not infer either value from a vehicle's age or purchase history.
| Vehicle value | TIF |
|---|---|
| $0 to $4,999 | $33.00 |
| $5,000 to $24,999 | $66.00 |
| $25,000 to $34,999 | $132.00 |
| $35,000 to $59,999 | $198.00 |
| $60,000 or more | $231.00 |

Choose the official transaction
- Existing California registration renewal
Use the actual renewal record to establish the amount due. Check the exact expiration day, not just the month on the plate sticker.
- New vehicle from a California dealer
Use the new-vehicle workflow for the purchase. The calculator above does not calculate sales tax, dealer charges or every initial-registration item.
- Used vehicle purchased in California
Ownership and transaction dates matter. Confirm existing registration, transfer and tax obligations before combining quoted amounts.
- Vehicle last registered outside California
Use the nonresident-vehicle workflow. Moving to California is not an ordinary in-state renewal.

Before you pay
Why does my DMV bill differ from this estimate?
The receipt contains only the named components. DMV also considers vehicle type, value, dates, address, special plates, weight and outstanding obligations. Exemptions can change even the normally applicable components. Compare line items rather than assuming the difference is an error.
Is there a grace period after my registration expires?
DMV states there is no grace period for annual registration fees. The exact expiration date is on the registration card. Late penalties combine separate charges; this estimate does not calculate them. The official page itself contains differing amounts in some penalty tables, so obtain the amount due from DMV rather than choosing a table in isolation.
What do I need for online renewal?
The DMV renewal service lists the plate number, the last five VIN or HIN digits and payment information. If changing your address, DMV says to do so at least three days before renewal. Follow the notice's insurance and smog requirements; calculating or paying a subtotal here does not complete registration.
Is VLF the same as my entire registration fee for tax purposes?
No. VLF is a separate line. DMV provides a VLF-paid lookup for tax purposes. Do not treat this estimated subtotal as a tax deduction or proof of payment; tax treatment depends on your circumstances.
What if I will not drive the vehicle?
DMV has a separate planned nonoperation process with eligibility and deadlines. Selecting a different amount in this calculator does not file a PNO or cancel a registration obligation.
Research notes and limits
The statutory components above were checked against DMV's published fee schedules. The estimator is limited to ordinary nonexempt passenger-vehicle scenarios; commercial weight classes, historical vehicles, military or disability exemptions, specialty plates and unusual transactions require the applicable DMV rules.
The source page contains multiple fee and penalty tables, not one universal total. We do not extrapolate these rates to future renewals or to another state. See calculation methodology, source coverage and how to read a renewal notice.
