New Mexico / 2026 law
New Mexico vehicle registration fee calculator
New Mexico increased ordinary passenger registration fees on July 1, 2026. The amount depends on the car's gross factory shipping weight and whether more than five years have passed since it was first registered, including time registered in another state.
Reviewed October 3, 2026 against the enrolled 2026 law (including its section 3 electric and plug-in hybrid fees), legislative status and Taxation and Revenue Department release.
Calculate a 12-month passenger subtotal
The 2026 law also keeps a $1.50 tire recycling fee.
For a passenger car above 3,000 pounds in its first five registration years, the statutory registration plus tire fee is $71.50. Once more than five years have passed since first registration, those two components are $57.75. These are examples for a 12-month period, not quotes for a truck, bus, motorcycle, RV or an optional two-year registration.
July 2026 rate table
| Gross factory shipping weight | First five years | After five years |
|---|---|---|
| 2,000 pounds or less | $33.75 | $26.25 |
| 2,001–3,000 pounds | $48.75 | $38.75 |
| Over 3,000 pounds | $70.00 | $56.25 |
The MVD registration page still displays the older $27–$62 range as of this review. The signed law's final text and the department's June 2026 announcement establish the July 1 increase. We use the enacted rates above rather than the stale range. MVD says eligible customers can receive a 5% registration-fee discount by renewing online; that conditional discount is not assumed here.
Electric and plug-in hybrid fees from January 2027
Section 3 of the same law adds an annual fee, due at first registration and every renewal, for each 12-month period an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle of 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or less is registered. It is charged on top of the weight-based registration fee and the tire fee. A conventional hybrid that cannot be plugged in is not charged under this section. MVD decides the classification from the vehicle's VIN data, so choose the powertrain your registration record shows.
| Registration period begins | Battery electric | Plug-in hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Before January 1, 2027 | None | None |
| During 2027 | $70 | $35 |
| During 2028 | $80 | $40 |
| January 1, 2029 and later | $90 | $45 |
The calculator adds the fee from the registration period date you enter. A battery-electric car over 3,000 pounds in its first five registration years renewed in February 2027 owes $141.50 in these statutory components: $70.00 registration, $1.50 tire fee and the $70 electric fee. A plug-in hybrid of 2,001–3,000 pounds that is more than five years past first registration, renewed in March 2028, owes $80.25: $38.75 + $1.50 + $40. For a date in 2027 or later, leaving the powertrain blank keeps the estimate partial rather than assuming no fee.
Buying a vehicle is a different transaction
A first registration can add title, plate and motor vehicle excise tax. New Mexico's excise rules depend on the taxable value and transaction facts; the purchase price alone is not enough to set every bill. The calculator keeps these items unresolved until MVD determines the amount. Bernalillo County vehicles may also need an emissions certificate under MVD's registration rules.
To get the amount for your VIN and registration term, use the MVD registration instructions or an MVD field office. If you already have a line-item amount, record it in the agency quote worksheet.
