New Hampshire vehicle registration fee calculator
A New Hampshire registration has a state weight fee and a town or city permit based on the maker's original list price and a six-step model-year rate. Treating the town permit as zero can understate the bill by hundreds of dollars.
Reviewed October 1, 2026 against RSA 261:141 and 261:153 after the January 2026 state-fee increase.
Calculate a standard 12-month renewal
A 3,001–5,000 pound vehicle with a $30,000 maker list price in the second preceding model-year permit band has $408.00 in these two modeled pieces: $48 state registration plus $360 town permit. Confirm the rate band and any local additions with your municipal clerk.
State registration changed in 2026
Current RSA 261:141 sets an annual $42 state fee at 3,000 pounds or less, $48 from 3,001–5,000 pounds, and $66 from 5,001–8,000 pounds. Above 8,000 pounds, the statute uses a gross-weight rate that this private-passenger renewal tool does not model. The section's source notes include a January 1, 2026 amendment; older fee tables showing less than these amounts are not used.
A first registration can be prorated according to months until the owner's birth month. This calculator shows only ordinary 12-month renewals and leaves first registration unresolved. A separate title charge may apply when buying a vehicle.
Town and city permit by maker list price
RSA 261:153 sets permit rates of $18, $15, $12, $9, $6 and $3 per $1,000 of original maker list price from the current through fifth-or-earlier model-year bands. The statute rounds the maker list price to the nearest $100 and the permit to the nearest dollar, with a $5 minimum. The clerk uses a straight-line rule so a registrant pays 12 months at each rate even when the period spans registration years. Choose the band on your clerk's notice; a purchase date alone does not determine it.
Municipalities may add optional transportation and motor-vehicle-waste fees. Larger towns or cities may also have an additional statutory permit fee. This tool leaves them for the clerk's quote instead of assuming they apply everywhere. You can record the final amount in the agency quote worksheet.
