Vermont / automobile renewal terms

Vermont vehicle registration fee calculator

Vermont's published automobile table gives the amount for each fuel type and renewal term. A gas or diesel car is $91 for one year or $167 for two. A battery-electric car is $178 or $341. The figures already include the applicable Clean Air and EV infrastructure components.

DMV's current registration table and infrastructure guidance reviewed October 1, 2026.

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

Published totals already include applicable Clean Air and EV infrastructure fees. Do not add either fee again.

Ordinary automobile renewal only. Use the fuel classification on the DMV record and choose one or two years.

Two years does not mean twice the one-year total

Current Vermont automobile renewal schedule
Fuel columnOne yearTwo years
Gas or diesel (ICE)$91$167
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)$135.50$256
Battery electric (BEV)$178$341
Other fuel$159.25$292.25

For a gas car, two separate one-year payments would be $182 at these rates, compared with the current $167 two-year amount. For a PHEV the corresponding comparison is $271 versus $256. These comparisons hold the published rates constant; they do not predict a future fee change or establish eligibility for any other vehicle class.

The automobile row should not be applied to a motorcycle, antique/exhibition plate or a heavier truck. Those classifications have separate entries in DMV's table. A conventional hybrid should use the classification actually assigned by DMV rather than being labeled a plug-in merely because it has an electric motor.

Why the two-year electric total is $341

The ordinary BEV base registration is $89 for one year or $163 for two years. Its infrastructure addition is $89 annually, so the two-year infrastructure component is $178. The biennial calculation is therefore $163 + $178 = $341. Doubling the discounted $163 base would produce $326, which is not the DMV automobile total.

For a plug-in hybrid, the infrastructure component is $44.50 per year or $89 for two. Adding those amounts to the gas/PHEV base totals of $91 and $167 gives $135.50 and $256. The tool uses the final published table so that applicable Clean Air fees are included exactly once.

New-vehicle warranty fees, purchase/use tax, a title, replacement documents and optional plates are different charges. A plain renewal does not automatically require all of them. Check your notice for a special plate contribution and use the Vermont quote worksheet for a purchase or different registration class.
