North Dakota / passenger renewal

North Dakota registration fee calculator

NDDOT’s 2026 passenger schedule sorts cars by the year they were first registered; the model year printed on the title is a different number and does not set the group. Pair that registration-year group with the NDDOT weight band to find the full annual base, then add the applicable electric or plug-in road-use charge.

Primary schedules and applicable 2026 rules checked October 1, 2026.

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

The official schedule explicitly uses year first registered, NOT model year or the year you bought the vehicle.

Full 12-month 2026 passenger renewal. Partial-year transactions must use the separate monthly columns in NDDOT’s schedule.

First registration is not model year

The official MVD-2 schedule expressly distinguishes year first registered from year model. In the 2026 table, the groups are 2021 or newer; 2018–2020; 2015–2017; and 2014 or earlier. The year you personally bought a used vehicle is not necessarily its first registration year either.

For a vehicle in the 3,200–4,499-pound band, those four groups produce full annual base amounts of $93, $81, $69 and $57 respectively. At 4,500–4,999 pounds the corresponding amounts are $111, $94, $79 and $63.

Confirm the first-registration history on the vehicle record if it differs from model year or the vehicle arrived from another state. The calculator asks for the group directly rather than silently deriving it from a model-year field.

Weight steps and road use

The first weight boundary is 3,199 versus 3,200 pounds; the next is 4,499 versus 4,500. Later bands run in thousand-pound steps from 5,000 to 9,000 and over. Use the passenger weight category assigned by NDDOT, not a truck’s separate gross-weight schedule.

For a passenger vehicle first registered in 2021 or later and weighing 4,500–4,999 pounds, the annual base is $111. The 2026 schedule adds $120 for fully electric propulsion or $50 for a plug-in hybrid. Supported totals are therefore $231 for electric and $161 for plug-in hybrid before other transaction charges.

A conventional non-plug-in hybrid does not receive the schedule’s plug-in charge. For example, an ordinary-fuel passenger vehicle first registered in 2014 or earlier and in the 5,000–5,999-pound band has a $76 annual base.

The published PDF also contains one- through eleven-month columns with rounded amounts. Do not estimate those columns by multiplying this annual result by a fraction, and do not assume the annual fuel charge follows an invented proration. Special plates, payment or mailing costs and title transactions require their own review.
