South Dakota / county treasurers

South Dakota vehicle registration fee calculator

South Dakota’s ordinary non-commercial license fee varies by vehicle weight and age. The Department of Revenue’s staggered schedule is monthly, so a full 12-month year differs from a short registration term. The county wheel tax and some service charges still require the county treasurer’s calculation.

Reviewed October 1, 2026 against the current DOR registration page and linked fee schedule.

Calculate an ordinary 12-month subtotal

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

Use the DOR non-commercial license fee table for the vehicle class, not truck/commercial gross weight.

The published annual fee is 30% lower for the 10-or-more year class.

The $100 fee applies after July 1, 2026 to non-commercial vehicles powered solely by rechargeable batteries.

For an ordinary purchase subject to 4% motor-vehicle excise; reciprocity and exemptions need county review.

Non-commercial 12-month vehicle license. Pick the DOR weight and age class; county wheel tax and short terms need a quote.

For a non-electric vehicle up to 2,000 pounds and under ten years old, the license plus technology pieces are $38.00. A qualifying battery-electric vehicle aged ten or more years in the 2,001–4,000 pound band has $152.40 of these known components, including the $100 annual EV fee. Neither is a complete county bill.

12-month license amounts, before county wheel tax and transaction charges
Vehicle weight0–9 years10 years or more
Up to 2,000 pounds$36.00$25.20
2,001–4,000 pounds$72.00$50.40
4,001–6,000 pounds$108.00$75.60
Over 6,000 pounds, non-commercial class$144.00$100.80

These values are the 12-month column of DOR’s staggered table. The older-vehicle rate is 70% of the younger rate. A pickup over 6,000 pounds may use a gross-weight class instead, so confirm its classification. The county wheel-tax table varies by county and weight and was revised January 2026; it is not silently assumed zero.

South Dakota’s motor vehicle page now lists a $100 annual fee for qualifying battery-electric vehicles. A 2026 DOR newsletter says the increase began July 1, 2026. The $2 technology fee applies to vehicle registration transactions after July 1, 2025. Registration by mail can add plate or registration mailing charges; payment-channel costs may differ.

Purchasing or first registering a vehicle

The DOR lists ordinary motor vehicle excise at 4% of purchase price and a $10 title fee. The Purchase tab can show those pieces when the ordinary taxable price is known. South Dakota requires a title and registration application within 45 days after purchase. Late applications can draw interest and penalties. Tax reciprocity, exemptions, lien notation and the additional nonresident titling fee require individual review.

The DOR says a customer without a South Dakota driver license or ID and without a physical South Dakota address can owe an additional $100 titling administrative fee, with listed exceptions. No residency conclusion is made by this worksheet. Ask the county treasurer about the title and tax treatment before relying on a purchase subtotal.

For a complete renewal amount, use DOR’s online motor vehicle services or the county treasurer. You may record the confirmed total in the quote worksheet.
