Rhode Island / passenger renewal

Rhode Island registration fee calculator

Rhode Island ordinary passenger renewals cover two years. The DMV weight table gives annual amounts, so the registration base and annual hybrid/electric fee must each cover both years. The $3.50 technology surcharge is added once for the transaction.

Current primary DMV/BMV schedules checked October 1, 2026.

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

Use the weight category on the DMV registration; verify GVWR rather than substituting curb weight.

Full two-year standard passenger renewal expiring in 2026, up to 10,000 lb. Annual commercial plates, partial new registrations and special plates have different treatment.

Annual table, two-year passenger renewal

The current DMV weight schedule starts at $30 annually for a passenger vehicle up to 4,000 pounds. The next annual amounts are $40 for 4,001–5,000, $48 for 5,001–6,000, $56 for 6,001–7,000, $64 for 7,001–8,000, $70 for 8,001–9,000 and $78 for 9,001–10,000 pounds.

Use the passenger weight class on the DMV record. Rhode Island registration instructions ask for gross vehicle weight information; do not replace the recorded class with an internet curb-weight specification. A commercial plate also has a different schedule and renewal term.

For a standard passenger vehicle in the 5,001–6,000-pound band, the two-year base is $96. The 2026 DOT surcharge is $40 for two years and the technology fee is $3.50 once. That gives $139.50 before any hybrid/electric addition or payment-service charge.

Mild hybrids are included in the new fee

The DMV’s 2026 notice specifies annual additions of $50 for a non-plug-in hybrid, $100 for a plug-in hybrid and $200 for a battery-electric vehicle. It expressly includes mild hybrids in the non-plug-in category. The DMV record determines classification; a small motor assist system can still matter.

For an ordinary two-year passenger renewal those additions become $100, $200 and $400 respectively. A 5,001–6,000-pound fully electric passenger car therefore has a $539.50 known subtotal: $96 base + $40 DOT + $3.50 technology + $400 electric fee.

The newer DOT amount is $20 per year, replacing the prior $15 annual amount. Using an old $30 biennial DOT charge understates a 2026 two-year renewal by $10. Conversely, adding another technology fee to an already-inclusive DMV quote would overstate it.

Credit-card service charges, inspection costs and special or vanity plate amounts remain separate. A new registration can be prorated, so use the full two-year example only for the matching ordinary renewal.
