Wisconsin registration and wheel tax calculator
Wisconsin's annual automobile registration is $85. Hybrid cars add $75; fully electric cars add $175. A city, village or town wheel tax and a county wheel tax can both apply, based on where the vehicle is customarily kept.
Reviewed October 1, 2026 against WisDOT's fee schedule, fuel surcharge and current wheel-tax pages.
Reconcile the state fee and both wheel-tax lines
A county name alone may miss the municipal wheel tax
As of this review, WisDOT's wheel-tax list shows Madison at $40 and Dane County at $40. An ordinary electric automobile subject to both has $340.00 in these components: $85 registration, $175 electric surcharge and $80 combined wheel tax.
The location on the registration record controls which wheel taxes the agency bills. Check both jurisdiction levels and their effective dates. For example, WisDOT lists Merrimac township's $25 charge for registrations beginning October 1, 2026, while some other listed changes begin in 2027. The calculator accepts confirmed amounts so a future effective date is not silently applied early. An unknown wheel tax remains unresolved.
Some special plates and registration classes are exempt. If the listed location is wrong or you paid a wheel tax in error, use the correction/contact instructions on the WisDOT wheel-tax page.
Choose the propulsion category once
The WisDOT fuel guidance distinguishes a hybrid capable of using electricity and another fuel from a vehicle powered solely by electricity. The calculator applies one $75 hybrid surcharge or one $175 electric surcharge. It does not add both to a fully electric car. With no wheel tax, those state components are $160 for a hybrid and $260 for an electric automobile.
WisDOT's fee chart puts trucks in weight-based classes. A truck should not use the $85 automobile line simply because it is driven for personal use. Record an official truck or first-registration amount in the Wisconsin quote worksheet.
