Alabama / ordinary passenger renewal
Alabama registration fee calculator
Alabama’s standard automobile registration is $23 annually. For a 2026 renewal, battery-electric vehicles add $203 and plug-in hybrids add $103. County ad valorem tax and issuing charges can make the actual tag bill higher.
Primary agency schedules and enacted rules checked October 1, 2026.

Which hybrid fee applies?
The $103 addition applies to a plug-in hybrid. A conventional hybrid that cannot be plugged in is not in that plug-in category. Choose the actual propulsion system recorded for your car; the word hybrid alone is not enough to identify this charge.
ALDOR’s 2023 memorandum raised the earlier $200 electric and $100 plug-in hybrid amounts by $3. The schedule calls for a further increase every fourth year. This calculator uses the amount applicable in 2026 and does not apply the next scheduled July 2027 increase early.
For the supported standard automobile, the known state components are $23 for gas/diesel or a conventional hybrid, $126 for a plug-in hybrid, and $226 for a battery-electric vehicle. Those examples exclude the county bill.
Why the county total differs
The $23 figure is the standard automobile registration amount published on the state plate page. It is not a statewide guarantee for the amount collected by a county issuing office. The published plate schedule itself distinguishes automobiles from pickup trucks and heavier categories.
Use your current county renewal notice to identify vehicle ad valorem tax, local fees and payment or mailing charges. Do not combine a prior year’s county tax with this year’s registration or assume an online service charge applies to an in-person payment.
A purchase also raises title, transfer and sales or use tax questions. The renewal calculation does not price those transactions. A specialty plate can add its own costs or have different eligibility; compare the exact plate category before using the ordinary automobile example.

The next enacted plug-in increase
ALDOR identifies a $3 increase beginning July 1, 2023 and every fourth year afterward. The $203 battery-EV and $103 plug-in hybrid additions therefore change to $206 and $106 on July 1, 2027. A conventional hybrid does not acquire a plug-in fee. Use the fee date in the worksheet to cross that boundary; county ad valorem tax and issuing charges still come from the county notice.
