Mississippi / county-issued tags

Mississippi car tag cost calculator

A Mississippi tag bill combines a state registration fee with county and city amounts. For an ordinary passenger vehicle, the state lists $12.75 on renewal and $14 at first registration. Your county Tax Collector must supply the taxes that turn those pieces into the amount due.

Reviewed October 3, 2026 against the Department of Revenue’s current motor vehicle FAQ.

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

Ordinary passenger registration and standard title only. County tax, privilege tax and Legislative Tag Credit need a county calculation.

The renewal’s known registration piece is $12.75. A first-time passenger registration plus an ordinary $9 title charge has a $23.00 known subtotal before taxes. The calculator’s Purchase tab represents this ordinary first-time title and registration case; a transfer or title exception needs confirmation.

Why two vehicles with the same tag type owe different amounts

The Department of Revenue says a Mississippi tag may include privilege tax, registration fees, ad valorem tax and, on a purchase, sales or use tax. Vehicle type and value and the owner’s city and county affect the taxes. A fixed statewide “total tag fee” would omit those differences. The Legislative Tag Credit can also affect a qualifying bill; the calculator does not presume eligibility or subtract a credit.

Ask your county Tax Collector for the assessed value, local tax, privilege tax, any credit and the exact amount for your tag or title transaction. Enter the agency’s complete response in the quote worksheet when you have it. Do not add the $12.75 registration piece a second time if it is already in that response.

A standard motor vehicle title is $9. The DOR lists $39 for a fast-track title, which is an alternative transaction and is not added to the standard title amount. Specialty and personalized plates have their own schedules.

What is Mississippi sales tax on a vehicle?

The DOR’s vehicle purchase FAQ lists a general 5% sales tax rate for cars, vans and buses. For this ordinary passenger-car example, subtract qualifying dealer discounts and trade-ins from the purchase price. A manufacturer rebate does not reduce that taxable amount.

Illustrative purchase: a $30,000 price before adjustments, a $1,000 dealer discount and a $10,000 qualifying trade-in leave a $19,000 taxable price. At 5%, the sales tax is $950. A separate $2,000 manufacturer rebate does not reduce the $19,000 tax base to $17,000. Confirm that the transaction and adjustments qualify with DOR or your county Tax Collector.

This $950 example is separate from the calculator’s $23 first-time registration and ordinary-title subtotal. Sales or use tax, privilege tax, ad valorem tax and any applicable credits still need an official assessment; the subtotal is not a complete tag bill. The FAQ’s separate 3% category for property-carrying trucks over 10,000 pounds is outside this passenger-car example.

When to renew or register

The DOR says a late-renewal penalty starts on the 16th day of the month following expiration. It rises in steps and can reach 25%; after that point the Legislative Tag Credit is unavailable. A renewal notice is a courtesy, so a missing notice does not stop the deadline. A newly purchased vehicle generally must be registered within 30 business days. New residents with a current out-of-state plate generally have 30 days after moving.

Mississippi states that the plate is registered to both the owner and the vehicle, so an old plate cannot simply move to a new vehicle. The county can determine whether unused registration credit applies when an old tag is surrendered. The ordinary tag calculation here does not model transfers, credits, late penalties, exemptions or commercial vehicles.
