Georgia Car Tag, Title & TAVT Calculator
Renewing a regular Georgia passenger tag costs $20.00 a year at your county Tag Office. Buying a car adds an $18 title application and, for most titled purchases, the one-time 7% title ad valorem tax on the value DOR assigns, so a car DOR values at $20,000 starts at $1,438.00 ($1,400.00 of it TAVT) before county charges.
A regular passenger registration or renewal has a $20 annual plate fee. When an ordinary titled purchase is involved, the Department of Revenue lists the title application fee separately. Most post-March-2013 titled vehicle purchases use Georgia’s one-time title ad valorem tax (TAVT), currently 7% of a DOR-determined taxable fair market value.

Estimate the standard components
The normal renewal has a $20.00 known plate fee. For a hypothetical titled purchase with $20,000 of DOR-determined TAVT taxable value and a confirmed ordinary 7% rate, the known registration, title and TAVT subtotal is $1,438.00. That example does not say a $20,000 sale always has a $20,000 tax base.
Which Georgia vehicle tax applies?
DOR distinguishes TAVT from annual ad valorem tax. TAVT generally applies when a vehicle purchased on or after March 1, 2013 is titled in Georgia. It is collected on title transfer, and a vehicle under TAVT generally does not also owe ordinary sales/use tax or annual ad valorem tax. Vehicles under the older annual tax regime, non-titled vehicles, qualifying family transfers and exemptions can follow different rules.
The published ordinary TAVT rate is 7%. DOR determines fair market value. For a new vehicle it compares retail selling price with its assessment-manual value, takes the greater, then applies eligible trade-in and dealer rebate adjustments. Use DOR’s TAVT estimator or your county Tag Office for the taxable base and classification before selecting the ordinary rate. No tax amount is shown here if those facts are unresolved.
Do not treat the annual $20 plate fee as a substitute for TAVT, and do not multiply a renewal by 7%. A vehicle that still owes annual ad valorem tax may need its current value and local tax district, which this standard model does not calculate.
Check the county and transaction
Individual vehicles are registered at the county Tag Office where the owner lives. DOR says new residents generally have 30 days to register; Georgia residents making a casual purchase have seven business days, while dealer-sale application timing differs. Some metro Atlanta counties require emissions inspection before renewal, and online renewal availability depends on county participation.
A renewal notice may list taxes, fees and a convenience charge; if the balance is missing, DOR directs owners to the county Tag Office. Georgia allows some new passenger cars to choose an initial two-year registration period. This calculator uses one-year ordinary amounts. The 2026 alternative-fuel fee schedule can add a separate charge to qualifying vehicles; it is omitted unless confirmed in an official quote. Use the quote worksheet to record a full agency amount without adding these items twice.
