Louisiana / ordinary passenger renewal

Louisiana registration fee calculator

Louisiana’s ordinary passenger plate is priced for two years using the value established by OMV. The minimum is $20 for that two-year period. Act 966 of 2026 also suspends the non-plug-in hybrid road usage fee until August 1, 2027; plug-in vehicles need separate payment-status checks.

Primary agency schedules and enacted rules checked October 1, 2026.

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

Use the value established for registration at purchase/initial assessment, not current resale value. It stays the basis for later renewals.

Confirm the covered period before treating a prior payment as current. Non-plug-in hybrid fees are suspended in this date window.

Only for an unpaid plug-in fee. Enter the agency-confirmed amount, not a duplicated LDR payment or an assumed two-year charge.

Ordinary two-year passenger renewal dated June 25–December 31, 2026. Use OMV’s recorded registration value and any confirmed unpaid road fee.

Use the recorded value and rounding rule

R.S. 47:463 establishes the registration value at purchase or the applicable initial assessment and keeps that value as the basis for later renewals. A falling used-car resale price does not automatically reduce this fee. Retrieve the established amount from OMV rather than substituting a current online appraisal.

The annual minimum is $10 and the ordinary collection covers two years. Above the minimum value band, each rounded $1,000 contributes $2 to the two-year plate. A remainder of $500 rounds upward; a smaller remainder is discarded.

For example, a recorded value of $20,499 produces a $40 plate fee, while $20,500 produces $42. A $9,000 recorded value still produces the $20 minimum. The calculator handles this boundary before adding a separately confirmed unpaid road fee.

Keep road fees and payment periods separate

The legislature’s final Act 966, effective June 25, 2026, suspends the non-plug-in hybrid road fee until August 1, 2027. Earlier revenue guidance describing a general hybrid charge predates that amendment. The suspension does not name plug-in hybrids or fully electric cars.

Louisiana Revenue guidance distinguishes 2025 and earlier road-fee collection from the 2026-forward OMV process and warns against paying the same period twice. A two-year plate term does not by itself prove which road-fee period is unpaid. Check the OMV notice and prior payment receipt together.

For a plug-in vehicle, this calculator adds only the unpaid amount you confirm with OMV. Marking the applicable period already paid prevents a duplicate charge in the estimate. Do not use a payment for a different year to mark the current obligation paid.

For illustration, a $20,500 recorded value gives a $42 plate; an independently confirmed $110 unpaid road amount would produce a $152 known subtotal. That example does not assert that every electric renewal owes $110 or that the plate and road fee cover the same dates. Service fees, special plates and late or historical disputed amounts still need review.
