Maryland / passenger renewal

Maryland registration fee calculator

Maryland’s current passenger and multipurpose fee bands use shipping weight. Published annual amounts already include the $40 EMS surcharge. A separate annual $125 zero-emission or $100 plug-in hybrid charge can apply, and the selected registration term changes the total obligation.

Primary schedules and applicable 2026 rules checked October 1, 2026.

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

Full registration obligation, not the first payment on an installment plan.

Shipping weight, with EMS already included

The current MVA fee page lists $120.50 per year for shipping weight at or below 3,500 pounds, $125.50 for 3,501–3,700 pounds, and $191.50 above 3,700 pounds. The page labels these passenger and multipurpose amounts as including the annual $40 EMS surcharge.

Use the shipping weight recorded by MVA. Gross vehicle weight rating describes a different measure and should not be substituted simply because it appears on the door label. A truck’s Class E schedule also differs from the Class A/M table.

For a 3,600-pound ordinary gas passenger car, a two-year renewal has $125.50 × 2 = $251 in supported registration components. Adding another $80 EMS amount would count that surcharge twice. A current MVA quote may combine the components into a single line.

Term and electric surcharge

The MVA schedule offers one-, two- and three-year registration terms for the covered classes. This tool multiplies the annual published amount by the chosen term. It presents the full registration obligation even if a customer qualifies to pay it in installments.

An ordinary battery-electric or other zero-emission vehicle has a $125 annual addition; a plug-in hybrid has a $100 annual addition. A conventional hybrid without a plug does not receive the plug-in charge in this model.

A zero-emission car above 3,700 pounds has $191.50 + $125 = $316.50 for one year, or $633 for two years. A plug-in hybrid in the middle weight band has $225.50 for one year and $676.50 for three years. These examples use the registration fee obligation, not the first scheduled payment.

Flag resolution, emissions testing, specialty plates and exemptions can change the amount collected. A purchase also introduces title and excise-tax treatment. Match the class, weight and transaction on the actual MVA notice before applying the renewal example.
