Pennsylvania / 2026 registration expiration

Pennsylvania registration fee calculator

The current standard passenger fee is $48 for one year or $96 for two. For registrations expiring in 2026, a subject battery-electric car also owes a $250 annual road user charge; a plug-in hybrid owes $63. A participating county can add $5 per registration year.

Reviewed October 1, 2026 against PennDOT's MV-70S schedule, revised April 2026, and its 2026 road-user-charge instructions.

Match the expiration year and renewal term

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

The result shows the full one- or two-year RUC obligation, not an installment payment.

The plug-in-hybrid charge is $63, not $62.50

PennDOT's 2026 table sets the PHEV road-user amount at $63 for one year and $126 for two. The PHEV amount is 25% of the electric fee, rounded up to the next dollar. Multiplying $250 by 25% without applying that rule produces a half-dollar understatement for one year.

With the county fee applicable, a standard PHEV renewal is $48 + $63 + $5 = $116 for one year. A corresponding two-year renewal is $96 + $126 + $10 = $232. For a battery-electric car, the same examples are $303 and $606. A gas car or conventional non-plug-in hybrid does not use the PHEV RUC line.

RUC exemptions include vehicles from model year 1990 or older, certain government vehicles and vehicles above 14,000 pounds GVWR, as described by PennDOT. The exemption input requires confirmation; it is not a general discount. A heavy vehicle may also belong to a different registration class and should not use this passenger base.

RUC enrollment and registration must cover the same length of time

PennDOT requires the RUC enrollment period and next registration term to match. A two-year registration therefore carries the two-year RUC amount. PennDOT offers a flat payment or an installment plan, but a payment plan changes timing rather than the full charge. Do not enter the initial installment as if it settled the entire period.

Check the renewal form for two-year eligibility. PennDOT says an “N/A” in the two-year fee block means that vehicle type cannot use the option. The county local-use fee is also annual: a participating county adds $10 for two years, not a single $5 charge.

Inspection and emissions testing, optional donations, agent services, special plates and reduced retired-person registration require their own treatment. A new title is not automatically owed during a regular renewal. For another expiration year or transaction, use the Pennsylvania agency quote worksheet.
