New Jersey / MVC passenger vehicles

New Jersey registration fee calculator

The MVC passenger fee table uses both vehicle weight class and model-year age. An ordinary passenger car over two model years old and under 3,500 pounds has a $46.50 registration charge. A recent, heavier passenger car has a different fee. ZEVs can owe an additional annual charge.

Reviewed October 1, 2026 against the MVC’s published fee schedule.

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

For 1980-and-later standard passenger vehicles. Use the weight class recorded by MVC; older historic classifications differ.

Annual renewal October 2026 uses the July 2026-June 2027 $270 ZEV fee. New-vehicle four-year registration is outside this model.

The ordinary older, lighter example above yields $46.50. A recent heavier passenger car that qualifies as a ZEV has a $354.00 known one-year renewal subtotal under the published schedule. Neither example covers a new vehicle’s first four-year charge.

MVC passenger class differences

Standard passenger registration fee for the listed ordinary classes
Weight and model-year classOlder than two yearsWithin two years
Under 3,500 pounds$46.50$59.00
Over 3,500 pounds$71.50$84.00

These amounts follow MVC classes 7 and 8 for ordinary passenger vehicles. Older 1970-and-earlier and 1971–1979 models have separate class tables. The manufacturer’s shipping weight, renewal document or an MVC correction determines the class; a rough curb-weight search is not enough to assign it. Senior and disability discounts can reduce eligible passenger registration fees and are not assumed in the table.

The 2026 ZEV fee is additional

New Jersey’s statute began a $250 annual ZEV fee July 1, 2024 and increases it by $10 on each of the next four July anniversaries. For a renewal in the July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 rate year, that is $270 in addition to the applicable passenger registration fee. The MVC decides whether the vehicle is a certified ZEV.

A new ZEV can owe multiple years of this fee upfront as part of a four-year initial registration. The calculator intentionally leaves new registrations unresolved because adding one annual $270 charge would understate that case. A title transfer, lien, specialty plate, class correction or replacement document also has separate fees. Consult MVC before payment.

The scheduled ZEV increase is tied to July, not January

MVC publishes a $250 annual ZEV fee beginning July 1, 2024 and four annual $10 increases. An annual renewal beginning July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 therefore uses $270. July 1, 2027 starts $280, and July 1, 2028 starts $290. This calculator applies the dated annual progression. A brand-new ZEV can owe four registration years up front; the initial transaction requires the MVC term assessment, not four copies of a single renewal year.
