North Carolina / Tag & Tax Together
North Carolina vehicle registration fee calculator
A standard private passenger renewal has a published $46.25 registration fee. Electric powertrain and some counties add listed amounts.
Reviewed October 3, 2026 against NCDMV's September 2026 fee sheet and digital registration guide.
Estimate published registration components
North Carolina also collects the county's vehicle property tax with the registration under Tag & Tax Together, so the number on a renewal notice can be much higher than the state fee subtotal.
An ordinary private passenger renewal outside the listed regional-fee counties has $46.25 in the modeled state registration line. A battery-electric passenger vehicle registered in Wake County has $275.75 in the state, EV and county/regional lines before vehicle property tax. Confirm the final amount on your notice.
Why the county changes your bill
The NCDMV MVR-94 sheet lists $15 for Durham, Orange and Wake counties, combining the regional transit authority registration tax and the county vehicle registration tax for transit. The sheet's own breakdown prints $10 regional plus $7 county, which does not add up to its $15 total; G.S. 105-561 caps the regional tax at $10 and G.S. 105-570 caps the county tax at $7. The calculator uses the $15 the sheet charges; if your renewal notice shows a different amount, enter it in the agency quote field. It lists $1 for Randolph County's Piedmont regional transport tax. Those listed additions are separate from the county's annual vehicle property tax, which depends on the county assessor's vehicle value and applicable rates. NCDMV can collect that tax, but value appeals and exemption questions go to the county assessor.
The same sheet lists an additional $214.50 annual electric-vehicle fee and $107.25 plug-in hybrid fee. The form calls the latter a “Hybrid Electric Vehicle Fee”; the enabling NCDMV fee adjustment labels it plug-in hybrid. The calculator only adds it when you select plug-in hybrid, not every non-plug-in hybrid. A first North Carolina title ordinarily has a $66.75 certificate charge; the Purchase tab includes it only as a scoped title item. Highway-use tax and possible property-tax deferral are left for NCDMV to determine.
Before renewal, a required inspection must be completed within the allowed window. The inspection station collects its own fee. Online PayIt payments have a $3 transaction charge plus card processing, which are not assumed for mail or in-person payments.
October 2026: no sticker or automatic paper card
Beginning October 1, 2026, NCDMV no longer issues a license-plate sticker or automatically provides a printed registration card. Registration and vehicle property tax still must be paid. A driver can download or print a digital record; NCDMV says a requested printed copy costs $5 through a license plate agency or by mail. Do not treat the absence of a new sticker as an unpaid registration.
Use the official renewal workflow or your notice to see the full amount. The quote worksheet can record it after you receive it.
