South Carolina / registration and county tax
South Carolina vehicle registration fee calculator
An ordinary non-truck passenger registration costs $40 for two years. The fee is $38 for an owner aged 64, or $36 for an owner aged 65 or older or with a qualifying disability. Hybrid and fully alternative-fuel vehicles have separate biennial road-use fees. County vehicle property tax remains another part of the bill.

Annual property tax and two-year registration run on different schedules
South Carolina county vehicle property tax is paid yearly. State passenger registration follows a two-year schedule. A county payment can include registration, which is why entering the entire county bill as “tax” can count registration twice.
Find the property-tax portion payable now, excluding the registration and road-use fee lines itemized by this calculator. For example, an ordinary gas passenger car with $240 of current county property tax has a supported subtotal of $40 + $240 = $280 when registration is due. The tool does not forecast the following year's assessment or assume another $240 will be payable today.
The vehicle's county assessment and applicable local levies determine the actual property-tax amount. A statewide percentage or a price typed into a generic calculator is not a substitute for that bill. Leave the input blank if the tax is unknown; enter zero only when the county has confirmed no amount is due.
SCDMV's renewal instructions explain situations in which paying taxes does not finish the registration transaction, including when the registration fee was not paid with the taxes. Follow the county and SCDMV instructions, and retain an original paid property-tax receipt if one is required.
Apply the road-use fee once per two-year term
Under section 56-3-645, vehicles using a combination of motor fuel and alternative propulsion pay $60 biennially. This includes a hybrid or plug-in hybrid that uses motor fuel. Vehicles powered exclusively by electricity, hydrogen or another qualifying alternative fuel pay $120 biennially.
A standard-owner hybrid therefore has $100 in registration and road-use components before county tax; a fully electric car has $160. An owner in the $36 qualifying class has $96 or $156 respectively. The calculator does not add a second fuel charge just because a hybrid can be plugged in.
First titling or registering a vehicle can trigger the separate infrastructure maintenance fee under section 56-3-627. That is not the same as the recurring alternative-fuel road-use fee. Purchases, new residents, trucks, exemptions and specialty plates need their specific transaction treatment; use the South Carolina quote worksheet for those amounts.
