Alaska / current registrations expiring in 2026

Alaska vehicle registration and municipal tax calculator

An ordinary Alaska noncommercial passenger renewal starts with $100 for 24 months. Municipal motor vehicle registration tax (MVRT) then depends on residence and model year.

Reviewed October 1, 2026 against Alaska DMV's five-page 2026 fee and MVRT chart, revision September 2, 2025.

Select the current expiration year first

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

Use the year the registration being renewed expires, not the end of the new two-year term. The tax chart is specific to 2026 expirations.

The 2026 DMV chart groups all 2019 and older passenger vehicles in one column.

Shared ZIP codes do not establish tax boundaries. Check the DMV chart and confirm the actual residence location.

This is an ordinary full 24-month noncommercial passenger renewal, excluding ownership transfers, exemptions and permanent registration.

For an ordinary full 24-month renewal of a personally owned, noncommercial passenger vehicle whose current registration expires in 2026. Leased, company-owned and exempt vehicles need different rules.

The calculator uses the DMV's 2026 expiration-year table and shows the $10 DMV counter charge separately.

Residence and model year change the tax

A 2022 passenger car in Anchorage, renewing online from a 2026 expiration, has a $210.00 subtotal: $100 registration plus $110 MVRT. An ordinary in-person DMV renewal adds $10. The same chart lists $70 passenger MVRT throughout Juneau's model-year columns, while Kodiak's passenger amount varies from $140 to $300.

The 2026 DMV chart groups 2019 and older vehicles in one column. Its “other areas” row covers Nenana, Nome, Petersburg, Sitka and Whittier. It does not mean every unlisted Alaska address pays that row's tax. Select zero only after confirming the actual residence is outside a taxable location.

Expiration, payment channel and permanent registration

Alaska DMV's renewal instructions allow renewal up to three months before expiration. When registration has been expired for less than a year, the ordinary two-year charge begins from the original expiration month. This is why the calculator asks for the registration being renewed, rather than the new term's ending year. A 2025 expiration can require the earlier chart even if you pay during 2026.

Online or mail renewal avoids the ordinary $10 DMV counter charge. A business partner can set a separate service charge. The calculator keeps that amount unresolved.

Some older vehicles qualify for permanent registration, depending on residence; age alone does not establish eligibility. The DMV permanent-registration page lists participating locations and different effective dates. Separate senior, disability and military exemptions also exist. Use the agency's eligibility decision and record the resulting quote instead of applying this ordinary renewal schedule to an exemption.
