Washington Car Tab & Registration Fee Calculator
Every Washington tab renewal begins at $43.25, the basic fee the Department of Licensing names. What you actually pay grows from there: weight fees, the RTA excise if you live inside the Sound Transit district, any local TBD fee and, for a plug-in car with at least 30 miles of battery range, $225 a year in electric-car and transportation-electrification fees.
The real bill can also include other vehicle-specific fees. A Seattle-area renewal and one elsewhere in the state may have very different totals even for similar cars.
DOL fee table reread October 12, 2026; RTA guidance reviewed October 1, 2026. Not a Washington agency.
Read the known starting amount
The calculator’s $43.25 is the basic amount named by DOL. It is not a statewide cap or the amount every driver owes. If you have a current renewal notice, use its itemization; DOL’s official tab-fee tool is the right place to calculate your vehicle’s full breakdown.
Location changes the bill
Some addresses are within the Regional Transit Authority area, where an additional motor vehicle excise tax can apply. DOL bases the taxable value for covered light vehicles on manufacturer suggested retail price and a statutory year-of-service schedule. The tax does not use your current purchase price or a generic ZIP average. DOL offers an RTA estimator and explanation.
A separate Transportation Benefit District fee can appear on the renewal as “TBD,” and its amount varies by district. A tab quote needs the correct garaging address and vehicle record; the basic starting amount does not establish whether either local fee applies. County vehicle licensing offices can resolve address and classification questions.
Weight, fuel and transaction type also matter
DOL lists gross-weight fees and an additional weight charge for passenger vehicles subject to weight fees. Electric cars can have separate charges, including an electric-car fee and transportation-electrification fee, depending on the vehicle and registration. The fee table also distinguishes regular tabs, title application, registration filing, new plates and expedited titles. Adding all listed rows to every car would overcharge many households.
A purchase or first Washington registration requires a different calculation: title/transfer, plates, use tax and other items may apply. The calculator leaves that transaction unresolved. Before paying a private seller or dealer, check the DOL buy-and-register instructions and use an official vehicle licensing office quote. The quote worksheet can itemize an amount already provided by the agency.
