Indiana / passenger renewal

Indiana registration fee calculator

Indiana registration has several layers: the $21.35 passenger fee, $15 transportation infrastructure fee, annual vehicle excise tax, and any local or hybrid/electric charge. A low base registration fee does not mean the complete renewal is $21.35.

Current primary DMV/BMV schedules checked October 1, 2026.

Calculate the supported renewal

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

Original manufacturer value, not today’s resale value or the amount you negotiated.

Age is 2026 minus model year. Use the special older-vehicle category when applicable.

Exclude state excise tax, which is calculated separately. Blank stays unknown; enter zero only if confirmed.

Full annual 2026 ordinary passenger renewal. Use original manufacturer retail value and the BMV vehicle-age class. No credits or special exemptions are assumed.

Original price and age determine excise tax

The BMV passenger table uses 17 original-value classes and ten age columns. Age means registration calendar year minus model year. In a 2026 renewal, a 2021 model is age five. The value class comes from the manufacturer’s original retail price, not the price you paid used or an estimate of today’s resale value.

A car with a $30,000 original retail value is class 15. At age five its annual state excise tax is $169. At nine or more years it is $42. Crossing the $30,000 class boundary can change the tax even when the car’s current market value looks similar.

Model year 1980 or older has a separate $12 flat passenger excise rate. Choose that category explicitly instead of treating every old car as the ordinary nine-plus-years column. The calculator does not apply an excise credit from a sold or destroyed vehicle without BMV review.

2026 hybrid and electric additions

The BMV fee chart revised January 1, 2026 lists $81 for the hybrid supplemental fee and $242 for the electric supplemental fee. These amounts are additional to registration and excise tax. Use the propulsion classification recorded by BMV, including the hybrid category for a plug-in hybrid.

For the $30,000, age-five example, a hybrid has $21.35 registration + $15 infrastructure + $169 excise + $81 supplemental fee = $286.35 before local taxes. The same inputs for a fully electric car produce $447.35 before local taxes.

County and municipal vehicle taxes can be separate charges. If you enter their confirmed total, exclude the state excise tax already calculated above. A blank local amount means it has not been priced; it does not mean your address has no local tax.

BMV identifies some hybrid/electric exemptions, including government entities and vehicles that must provide a fuel-tax license. Those are outside this ordinary private passenger example. Payment-service fees, distinctive plates, late charges and inspection requirements should be checked separately.
