Ohio / 2026 passenger renewal

Ohio vehicle registration fee calculator

Ohio's $20 passenger license tax is only one line of a renewal. Starting January 1, 2026, the public-safety registration fee became $16. A one-year service fee, local permissive tax and hybrid or electric vehicle charge can also apply.

Reviewed October 1, 2026 against Ohio Revised Code sections 4503.04, .038 and .10, and the BMV's July 2026 local-tax guidance.

Transaction type

Use the registration period start for dated fuel surcharges; some state fields separately ask for expiration or assessment year. Blank uses today. Unpublished successor fees require an agency assessment.

The fee for each fuel type applies to each full registration year, not only the first registration.

Use the official Ohio BMV taxing-district amount for your registration address; local rates are in $5 increments.

A gas passenger car in a district with no permissive tax has $44.00 of modeled fees: $20 license tax, $16 safety charge and $8 service fee. A battery-electric passenger car with a confirmed $20 local permissive tax has $264.00 in those same categories including Ohio's $200 EV fee. Neither example substitutes for the BMV invoice.

Distinguish recurring charges

Ohio Revised Code 4503.04(B) sets a $20 passenger-car license tax. Section 4503.10(C)(1) adds $16 to an ordinary registration or renewal after January 1, 2026; older $11 summaries are outdated. Section 4503.038 sets an $8 one-year registration service fee. The recurring fuel-type charge is $100 for a non-plug-in hybrid, $150 for a plug-in hybrid and $200 for a battery electric passenger vehicle. The BMV charges it per year on multi-year registrations as well.

This page scopes the ordinary 12-month passenger renewal. Initial issue, title, specialty plates, prorated terms and plate/sticker charges can differ. Some northeast Ohio registrations require an emissions certificate before renewal; check your BMV notice.

Get the taxing-district amount

The BMV's July 2026 permissive-tax FAQ says counties, cities and townships may levy local registration taxes in $5 steps, up to $30 per registration year for any one taxing district. A county name alone may be insufficient because municipal and township levies can differ. Enter $0 only after checking the BMV Taxing District Code Book or renewal notice. The calculator rejects amounts outside $0–$30 or not in $5 steps.

If the BMV quotes a total for your vehicle and address, record it in the agency quote worksheet.
