Kentucky / county-clerk renewal breakdown
Kentucky registration renewal cost calculator
Kentucky county clerks publish a $21 standard noncommercial plate renewal amount. Your bill can be larger because it also contains assessed vehicle property tax and, for a plug-in vehicle, an EV ownership fee.
Renewal guidance, clerk fees and current fuel definitions checked October 1, 2026. The EV amount must come from the current clerk notice because it is subject to annual adjustment.
Copy the tax and ownership lines, not the whole bill
Keep those lines separate when comparing the notice.
A conventional hybrid and a plug-in hybrid have different treatment
KRS 138.475 defines an electric vehicle by its ability to charge from an external plug, whether it uses only an electric motor or combines electricity with an engine. A plug-in hybrid therefore belongs to the EV ownership-fee category. A conventional hybrid without plug-in charging does not.
The state's December 2024 announcement eliminated the conventional-hybrid ownership fee from January 1, 2025. That announcement set the 2025 fee at $126 for both electric cars and plug-in hybrids. It also explains that the fee is adjusted annually using the highway construction cost index. A dated 2025 announcement should not be treated as independent verification of a later year's amount.
For a current plug-in renewal, copy the ownership-fee line from the county clerk's notice. If, as an illustration, that notice confirms $126 and property tax of $180, the modeled subtotal is $21 + $126 + $180 = $327. The example does not certify $126 for every renewal year. With the same $180 tax, a conventional non-plug-in hybrid has $201 in the modeled components.
Annual property tax is different from the purchase usage tax
Vehicle property tax on a renewal depends on the assessment and applicable taxing districts. It is not a fixed addition to the $21 plate fee. Use the tax-only portion of the notice; including the plate or ownership fee again would double count them.
Kentucky's motor vehicle usage tax applies to ownership transfers or a vehicle first offered for registration in the state, with its own valuation and credit rules. It is not a 6% charge that should automatically be repeated at every annual renewal. Use the Department of Revenue's instructions for a purchase or new-resident transaction.
Mailing, online processing, card charges, special plates, optional contributions and penalties can affect the amount paid. Woodford and Scott county clerks list the ordinary $21 renewal separately from property tax and mailing-related costs. For a special plate, transfer or different vehicle class, record the clerk's complete calculation in the Kentucky quote worksheet.
